Failure or Helplessness..
People usually define friends as those whom they can trust, confide in, be understood by and look towards in dire times. But if you fail in any one or all of those categories, would you still be considered a friend by that person?
There are many many instances in life, where each individual
faces certain situations and problems and is beyond the help of any of their
friends or trusted loved ones. Problems at home, with family, confusion about
themselves and their life, private issues and such. When someone you care
about, faces certain issues, they confide in you, sharing their sorrows,
seeking some guidance or help, and there is little to nothing that you can do
for them.
In case of a family problem, as an outsider, there is little
you can do, without invading their privacy at times, or be seen as rude and
intrusive by the elder members. Relationship problems, where the partner of the
person who is your dear friend sees you as a threat at times, and while you
have the best interests at heart, your opinion is not always welcome by the
other in that relationship.
When it comes to an individual's struggle to understand
themselves, some people, usually trained professionals acts as guides or
beacons to help the person find their way. But as a friend, there is little
advice to offer. We too, in an informal way, through intimacy and understanding
act as guides, to help them seek the answers themselves. These are not the only
situations, but the most common ones where you find yourself feeling helpless,
unable to perform your duties as a friend or loved one.
Does that mean we failed? Are we not as reliable or
trustworthy? Or do we simply do what we can, wait for a better moment to be of
some real help and never give up on our friends? This is again one of those
questions that is answered differently by each, and they need only answer their
own doubts. In my experience, friendships and their strengths are defined by
the act of simply not forgetting those treasured memories, even for years since
you last see them.
