Metro Manners
The last post I wrote, was about killing the conductor when you travel by bus in Delhi and NCR. Well, recent events have reminded me of the troubles when travelling by metro on days that the service isn't working quite as well. In this case, my stand is 'educate the passenger and kill the idiots'.
Last two days, the yellow line of the Delhi Metro, the one
towards Jahangirpuri, has not been working as efficiently with the time span
between trains extending beyond 5-6 minutes. This situation is worsened during
rush hours, and is confusing, because the frequency of trains towards the other
end of this line(HUDA City Center) seems
unaffected, so where IS the delay happening?
Anyway, the point that I'd like to shed my hatred and anger
on is the behaviour of the casual or occasional metro traveller during such
troubled times. The early morning and late night office crowd, or the
pro-metros as I call them, have over time learned the appropriate mannerisms
and patience for travelling in the metro during times of crisis as well, so all
goes smoothly, even more so when the DMRC deploys the guards at door entrances
when the train pulls into the station. But what about when it is the rest
85%(random guess) of Delhi's metro users?
One word, chaos.
The train is running at near full capacity of people, but of
course, these are Indians we are talking about, we can make four lanes of
traffic on a two lane road. So, if you see the space between people, which is
meant for air, the air has to go out, because they will get in. This behavior is even more acute, this misbehavior actually, when people are in large
numbers. They will barge into the train, pushing, bashing and scattering the
already stuffed-in passengers, and whine about how they all need to reach home,
everyone can 'kindly adjust' for their large paunch and chubby butts. I mean,
you're fat, not my fault, get the next train b***h!
There is same or even more crowd during morning rush hours
when the pros travel, but it is still a much smoother journey, so clearly, the
problem is with the damn idiots! You need to train them, with a whip in some
cases, the etiquette and manners of
travelling in the metro.
