The Death of a Nation

"It's impossible to consider living without ideals. However, when ideas lead to ideology, that's a very dangerous thing. Ideology then leads to creating the image of an enemy, and it leads to the murder and massacre that we've seen since the beginning of time."
-Michael Haneke

Now, I'm sure a lot of the people around the world have heard of the latest tragedy in the history of humanity. In a grim series of events, a group of militants broke into a school in the city of Peshawar, Pakistan, wherein they shot and killed over 140 civilians, most of whom were small children. The Taliban has claimed it to be their response to make the people feel what they go through when American bombers kill their own young. While some of the militants died by suicide bombing, others were shot dead by Pakistani forces.

Not long after, the Pakistani army allowed the media into the school to see the carnage close-up. Pools and splatters of dried blood over the floor and walls, riddled with pock marks of gunfire sprayed upon them  as they tried to flee. Most of these unfortunate children were the sons and daughters of army personnel around Peshawar.

That was a sum up of the available details on this tragedy. Now, as someone who gave up on humanity and whack job countries like Pakistan long time ago, I reacted little to this news but my condolences to the families of the victims. I must explain though that I reacted little not for lack of sympathy, but for a failure to accept the reality of what has happened. It is  a near unwritten rule of nature, that you do not intentionally kill children in large numbers. Yes they are often the collateral damage of bombings, they are among the victims of attacks, but to intentionally kill over 120 children in cold blood inside a school?! And the Pakistani response has been appalling. Their cricket team who is playing a series in UAE, who suspended a test match due to the death of an Australian cricketer Phil Hughes but have had no public response to this calamity. There has still been no serious action taken by Pakistani officials to respond to this attack by Taliban. And in recent news, the 26/11 suspects have been released on bail. A nation that does not respond strongly to the massacre of its own school children, is beyond saving. As it stands, there is no hope for this nation, and one can only pray for the victims, their families and for the safety of others trapped in that country void of human decency, and that such an incident does not repeat itself.

I was uncomfortable writing about this incident, felt as if I may be jumping aboard the bandwagon, but it was still something that cannot be allowed to go by, without sharing my thoughts on it with you all.

As always, thanks for reading, and stay tuned for more from The Sane Lunatic.
