Suicide Squad : Movie Review

Okay, so this is gonna be the big one. The one that is gonna salvage the DC universe of big movies. Right?

Well, it was supposed to be, but it doesn't feel like it even tried. The poorly written plot and the dull hoard of evil minions was only partly responsible for why this movie wasn't everything it could have been.

It is what the trailers suggest and what the comic enthusiasts will already know, a shady US government department puts together a team of anti-heroes, a mix of sociopaths and meta-humans, in anticipation of a 'terrorist' type of Superman. The cold-hearted mastermind behind this task force of villains, Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis) has loyal soldier Rick Flag ( Joel Kinnaman) in charge of these lunatics.

The film has the same problem that some of the recent superhero movies have faced, too many characters in one film to have enough time for any story-building. All the team members, Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang (Jai Courtney), Diablo ( Jay Hernandez) & Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) all got a brief back-story montage, which was probably the best part of the movie. Jared Leto's Joker was barely present in the whole movie, but at least whenever he was, Mr. J & Harley's crazed romance would bring a jolt of life to the film.

For the most part, this was a Will Smith movie with some other cool characters along for the ride. Deadshot got some decent lines and some badass scenes too, carried all too well by our man Will. Margot's Quinn too was an underused character considering the potential she has to direct the narrative.

The most important aspect of any superhero, or anti-hero, film is the antagonist. The lack of an interesting enough villain is, in my view, the main reason why this film has failed. The Enchantress (the smoking hot Cara Delevinge) was just a voice-modified model in skimpy goddess attire with glowy eyes and flashy powers. The final clash too was very anti-climactic, making for a very dull ending to the whole build-up.

Overall, I'd rate the movie 4 out of 7 choco cookies. The extra cookies are for the only good performances in the film by Viola Davis, Margot Robbie and, the one and only, Will Smith.
