The Colaba Diaries: Ep 3-A new room, a BMW and wine from a coffee mug
A lot of stuff happened over the last two and half weeks, since the last episode of the series, let's see if I can remember where we left off. Well, I kinda do.
So, first, we had the full week of happy people, what with Christmas and the New Year. While I have ranted about how I feel about festive cheer, I'll admit, I liked the Christmas stuff in the office primarily because I got a bunch of gifts and giveaways in the office, especially a jar of Hershey's chocolate spread and a stocking. The week between that and New Year's was rather dull and uneventful, just shuffling between work and the room.
On New Year's eve, I moved to the living accommodations that I shall be staying in for the coming 6 months. It's on the fourth floor, there's no elevator and I had to make a bunch of trips. Yep, that was that day gone. To treat myself, soberly, I overate on pizza, which I didn't regret as much as usual. The week that followed was basically about settling into the place, getting familiar with the new folk I'd be sharing my living space with, all that manner of suffering and discomfort for a person such as myself.
On the first weekday of 2017, I was joined at work by a fellow trainee, a man with a mechanical passion for cars and engines. While we don't necessarily see eye-to-eye, it should be good to have a colleague on a similar level of experience. There was also more activity in general at the office now that the seniors were back from their outdoorsy work, or out of the holiday mood. In the next couple of days, the scope of my work evolved to include the kind of duties that I had performed in my previous office, all because the management had a sheet of stats that said it will work, irrespective of the drop in quality of content. This development put me in a rather distressed mood.
This past Friday, I got to tag along and assist my seniors for a spot of testing. The story piece on the cars involved will be printed in the next issue, so until that comes out, I cannot disclose the details, but one of them was a BMW. It rode low like Elaine and had a spoiler that would deploy after a certain speed. That's all I can say for now.
We headed out on to the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, and while it took us a while to get out of the city, it wasn't long before I finally understood why these automotive publications were based in this city. Apart from the factor of business and the entertainment industry being based here, that highway is one of the best in the whole country. As my senior phrased it, "a more dramatic version of the Yamuna expressway". The wide lanes, the smoothness of it, the curves through the Ghats, the scenery, it all just came together in a way that it simply raised the benchmark of driving pleasure for me.
Like I mentioned, the details of this spectacular day wherein I did get to drive too, will only be shared once the next issue of the magazine is on the stands. But what I can say is, I didn't get to drive the BMW but I rode shotgun and experienced new speeds that my Elaine was too old for, and learned that I don't have any problems washing cars that we will be testing but I need to be better at it to do it better and to do it faster.
The following night, aka, yesternight, I finally had the time and comfort to celebrate the completion of my detox phase: three months sans liquor. I celebrated the occasion with a bottle of white wine and some delicious penne pasta. Of course, given the state of my current accommodations, I was not ideally equipped to enjoy the wine, but I did alright, drinking it from my coffee mug. It also made the 750ml of wine get drunk without much delay. I have to say, while I would have preferred a pint of German bitter, this wasn't bad at all.
As the next week of 2017 is poised to begin, I know I have a busy month ahead, professionally speaking which will also likely translate to some amazing memories, and therefore I look forward to it with an unusual level of enthusiasm. That's all for this ep, till the next one, stay tuned to the Loon and subscribe for the latest updates. Thanks for reading!
