The Colaba Diaries: Ep 7 - Long nights, driving fun and good people
Right, in the last Ep, we left off with the finding of the Guinness. And boy was it a long week after that too. So let's get right into it!
This one was quite the week, what with the 87th Geneva International Motor Show, which means long-looong days at work for me, not that I'm complaining given what my work is *smug smile*. Actually, the second of those was more like a work marathon. After being in office for about 13 hours, I left to join some of my colleagues at a night shoot. I had gone to get some more experience and to be of assistance if possible. What followed was about another 8 hours of being at work, which I don't mind, but I didn't actually do much actively, which makes it harder to stay awake. Still, I got back to my base early enough to catch three hours of sleep before heading off to work again that day.
The shoot itself was interesting and offered many insights about certain aspects of the nature of work involved in a task such as this. I'm being particularly and exasperatingly vague as I can't quite give you readers the details about the shoot, sorry. What I can say, is that it involved a red rear-wheel drive convertible sportscar of German make.
The following day was....quite uninteresting actually, and work as usual. I will say I was surprisingly sprightly given how little sleep I had had. The next day, Friday, was a....new kinda experience for the Loon. What it was, was a usual full day of work, from where me and my colleagues had to go to an office awards party, for all the brands under the company and all the departments within. Sure enough, us being us, we went mostly because we were ordered to, had no hopes as such of winning in any of the award categories, and decided to make the most of the open bar.
At the event, it was the first time the Loon had spent time with any of the other familiar faces from the office, in a social-outdoorsy scenario, and with booze involved, the results were interesting with some surprises too. Of course, the beer helped deal with the large number of people around who were annoyingly cheerful.
The night took a rather interesting turn when I came to know that my colleague, lets refer to him as SB, who was drinking responsibly, had allowed one of the (two) sober team members to take his car back. The car that I came in, and had my bag in the backseat. The bag in which I had kept the keys to my room. Without which I had lil chance of getting in at 2 AM. And I was scheduled to go for a shoot the next afternoon. Fuck.
Of course, explaining my plight to SB whose car it was, he was quite happy to help out but had to deal with a "drunk-clingy-female-at-the-office-party" kind of cliche scenario. Being a nice and patient person, it took him about 90 mins before he finally got her to take a cab home. Meanwhile, I hung around conversations, found ways to amuse myself and kicked at the grass impatiently. But eventually, we left the hotel, maybe as part of the last group of people leaving that night, and headed to awaken our colleague, AG, who had taken the car which had my keys in it. At 4 AM. Luckily for me, he was super helpful, and not long after, I had my bag and my keys and I was on my way back to the room, reaching at around 4:45 AM,
The same day, after about 4 and a half hours of sleep, I was on my way to Bandra to meet up with AG again, to assist on the shoot for his story. This time again, I was driving the company's 'rented' Maruti Brezza while AG up ahed drove the car he was doing the story on. We were heading out to a place often used by many automotive publications to road test and shoot, an area called Aamby Valley, not too far from the city limits of Mumbai. The week before was the first time I had been there, but this was the first time I drove almost all the way up there and around those lovely twisty roads. While the bulk of the Brezza wasn't nearly as fun as it would have been in my dear Elaine (*sob*), the weather and the drive was fantastic!
As if that weren't enough of a treat, there was a drag event happening not far from where we were. We didn't go there but as a result a bunch of stunning superbikes and a collection of gorgeous supercars and sportscars. A Porsche 911 GT3, an Aston Martin Vantage (I think), a Lamborghini Huracan LP610-4, an Audi RS5, an Audi RS7, a Nissan 350Z and even a Mitsubishi Evo X. Oh yeah, a properly EPIC day as a petrolhead.
The next day was mostly about catching up on my sleep, and meeting good ol' Zoo for an afternoon as well. That was that. A super busy, overload of work and fun, exhaustingly social and interactive week. Not bad.
