Qarib Qarib Single: Movie Review

Yep. The Loon went for a Hindi rom-com of sorts. But, I was pleasantly surprised, hence this review.

The film takes on the topic of moving on from past relationships once you cross your thirties, for whatever reasons and the challenges that one might face in the process. It also makes a comment on the disgusting humans, almost mainly men, who are often found on online dating sites, but humorously.

'Qarib Qarib Single' has the brilliant Irrfan Khan headlining as one of the protagonists, Yogi the poet, and is accompanied by Parvathy as Jaya. The talented actress here making her Bollywood debut does a good job of channelling a 35-year old widow who works as a Web developed in Delhi, and also nails the fourth-wall breaks in the film.

The jokes are silly but innocent and well-delivered by Irrfan's character while Jaya provides good banter with occasional outbursts that reflect the flip side of how repressed she feels around most people in her life. The two meet on an online dating site and after just two coffee dates, they embark on a trip to meet Yogi's ex-girlfriends in Rishikesh, Bikaner and Gangtok, taking the duo through a wide range of experiences to bond over. The film has a limited support cast with small moments, starring Brijendra Kala, Isha Sharvani, Neha Dhupia and Luke Kenny.

Director Tanuja Chandra has done a good job while the editing could have been a bit more polished to enhance the film's narrative. It does get a bit slow in some places and some moments seem a bit overdone. On a whole, the film is a pleasant way to spend about two hours with some laughs and chuckles and has a notable well-written ending. I'd rate this film 7 out 10 mangoes, and a shoutout to my friend JV who suggested this as a watch.
