Parasite: Movie Review

Yep, I just watched the movie that won the Oscars. Funnily enough, it's not the first Bong Joon Ho movie I've seen but we can talk about that another time. My first thought after watching 'Parasite' was that it's not a great movie. It's a really good story, told extremely well through film.

The plot, without spoilers, is quite straightforward but features many layers to it. A poor family of four living in a sub-basement of a Korean metropolis. They're hopeless and unmotivated but sharp when it comes to making a quick buck. The family's patriarch Kim Ki-taek is played by the awesome Song Kang-ho, who is particularly relaxed about the difficulties of life. His supportive wife Chung-sook Kim (Jange Hye-jin) is shown to be a former athlete of competitive level in the field of ball and chain. Their son, Kim Ki-woo takes after his father while daughter Kim Ki-jung has a shorter temper with a more cynical view. Times are tough until Kim gets recommended for a job as an English tutor in the wealthy Park villa. Kim is quick to realise that Mrs Park is a relatively simple woman with a very successful husband. He sees potential employment for his entire family as the servants of the Park family and a healthy paycheck for everyone. Of course, the plan would require acute forgery but that's something he and his family are actually pretty good at. That is until their con is threatened to be exposed to the good-natured Park family that hired them.

The movie is decently paced with enough humour to cover the insidious undertones of the protagonist. All the characters have depth, with both endearing and dislikable characteristics. It keeps you engaged in every scene. The dark twists of the storyline hold your intrigue through its runtime but I'm afraid sharing those would be the same as giving spoilers. As a fan of various anime series, I am no stranger to watching something in its original language with subtitles. In fact, a subbed movie is always better than a dubbed version in my opinion.

Many of the frames and setups of various scenes in Parasite are works of art. It's subtle but the more times you'd watch it, the more you'd notice it. The Korean acting style does have its own flavour in terms of pronounced facial expressions, but this ensemble of actors really brought the characters to life.

Parasite is the first non-English movie to win the Oscar for Best Motion Picture. It also won Best Directing, Best Original Screenplay and Best International Feature Film. There are plenty more awards to its list already. But that's not why you should watch this movie, it's only why most of us have heard of it. You should watch Parasite because it is simply a gripping story, from beginning to end.

I rate Parasite 10 out of 10 peaches and I can't wait for it to be available on streaming services so I can watch it as many times as I wish.
